Summary
Alina Starkov doesn’t expect much from life. Orphaned by the Border Wars, the one thing she could rely on was her best friend and fellow refugee, Mal. And lately not even that seems certain. Drafted into the army of their war-torn homeland, they’re sent on a dangerous mission into the Fold, a swath of unnatural darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh.

When their convoy is attacked, all seems lost until Alina reveals a dormant power that not even she knew existed. Ripped from everything she knows, she is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling. He believes she is the answer the people have been waiting for: the one person with the power to destroy the Fold.

Swept up in a world of luxury and illusion, envied as the Darkling’s favorite, Alina struggles to fit into her new life without Mal by her side. But as the threat to the kingdom mounts, Alina uncovers a secret that sets her on a collision course with the most powerful forces in the kingdom. Now only her past can save her . . . and only she can save the future.
Review
This was another one of those books that made it's way to the top of my "To Be Read" pile pretty quick. It was one of those books that EVERYONE was talking about. Awesome reviews kept popping up left and right! I just couldn't help myself, I had to find out what all the book reader love was about! The masses said this book was awesome! The masses were right! This book was pretty great! Definitely a favorite of mine for this year!

The world of the Grisha turned out to be really interesting. I definitely loved learning about the different gifts everyone had, and the details that went into it all. Every detail down to the smallest things, like the clothes they wore; all beautiful. I was totally routing for Alina in black! Those who've read the book will understand lol!

The darkling had me won! I was head over heals for him. Couldn't help it! That one there is hard to resist! Who's with me! So needless to say, the ending was a complete and utter surprise! One that had me shaking the book and begging "No no no! Not the darkling!!!!" I hope that's not spoilery. I'm trying to avoid the spoilers guys. For your benefit of course.

When it all comes down to it. This book is just a great read. An interesting world. A story that keeps you reading. A mixture of characters that you won't soon forget. Everything a five star book should be!

I can definitely see this book going places! This reader is a fan for sure!

  8. SUPER psyched you loved S&B, Amanda! I cried SO much reading it...laughed a few times, and generally had my heart broken. I fell for the Darkling too, at first, but in the end I'm a Mal girl. :)
