My Review: The Rise of Nine by Pittacus Lore

Summary

I went to Spain to find Seven, and I found even more, including a tenth member of the Garde who escaped from Lorien alive. Ella is younger than the rest of us, but just as brave. Now we're looking for the others--including John.

But so are they.

They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They caught me in New York--but I escaped.

 Review

We've got a classic case of "filler novel" syndrome with this book. Might not always be a bad thing, but in this particular case, not such a great thing either. After finishing the book, I couldn't get over the sense that nothing really happened, at all. A whole 400 pages goes by and NOTHING happens?? I've heard about building suspense, but teasing someone thoughout an entire book, and simply ending it. This reader was not amused. I kept reading and hoping for things to happen, for the story to progress; but it didn't really go anywhere. Instead we're overwhelmed with backstory and useless fluff. I understand the need to introduce new characters and build their personality for the reader. I just didn't feel it was necessary in this particular case. It was nice to meet the guard members. Number five has yet to reveal himself, which was one thing that did leave me anxious for the next book. But really that's the only thing that left me anxious for the next book. I guess we'll say, I'm looking forward to reading more, but the next book isn't anywhere near the top of my "must read" list. 

Really it's my dedication to the series as a whole that will keep me reading. I'm expecting more from you Pittacus Lore! Hopefully the next book will give me that.
