Review: Article 5 by Kristen Simmons

Rating

Summary
New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren't always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it's hard for her to forget that people weren't always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It's hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.

Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.

That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings—the only boy Ember has ever loved.
Review
I really wish I had liked this more than I actually did. But deep down I guess it comes down to the fact that I'm not that big of a fan of action packed books. I love me some action, but I also need a bit more. Anyone looking for a book that'll keep you on your toes... this one sure did that. It kept me reading. Slowly. I just wasn't wow'd. My reasons for reading this book, the cover, the summary, and other reviews. This book has gotten some really great reviews, and it's because of that that I can't say this book is bad. It's not a bad book. I can see why people like it so much, and I can agree with many of them to a certain extent. At first glance, this book screams potential!! It just wasn't for me. I thought it dragged a bit. I read and read and waited for it to go somewhere and then it just kinda ended. Nothing dramatic. Nothing mind blowing. That might be why it took me almost 2 weeks to finish! That's never a good sign. For the action seeking reader, yes I'd recommend a read. For someone looking for a little more than that... well I'd look somewhere else.

All in all.. not my kinda book... 3 stars.

  1. Ooo...2 weeks? Now, I do really enjoyed action books, but I generally need a bit more as well. Good characters?? That's usually important for me. I suppose we'll see...although school's kept me from reading much lately. Great review, Amanda!

  3. I have heard a lot of awesome stuff about this book. I still haven't gotten a chance to read it yet though. I do love action, but not if it is at the expense of a good storyline. The action needs to enhance it not be the only driving factor of the story. I still do want to read this when I get a chance though. Thanks for the great, honest review.

  4. I had the same problem, it took forever to finish and I wanted to smack some sense into Ember 90% of the time.
